There is definitely a sea change in the way we think about fitness and lifestyle; gone are the days of hefty meat and veg dinners followed by glutinous mounds of steamed pudding with custard. Today we generally acknowledge the need to cut down on the carbohydrate heavy meals, hopefully plumping for more proteins and green vegetables and salads. There is definitely a massive low carb and keto business out there – different experts have video channels and are all over social media promoting their diet and nutrition ideas.
Another way we are trying to improve our health and physical abilitiy to cope with the everyday requirements for moility and balance is to attend gym classes with other like minded folk. In the area around here, the medical centres and surgeries are busily referring older folk for assessment at the local gym and health centre and as a result, these seniors are being booked onto special classes aimed at educating and improving balance and mobility on a permanent basis. There are classes involving resistance bands; hand weights; music and movement etc. The trainers explain the need to get up out of armchairs and get our bodies moving again. Many of the seniors who find themselves in this sometimes daunting environment need the trainer to start the term gently, explaining why they must start moving and using those muscles again, together with general advice on how to practice at home and how to eat a better balanced diet.
